March 19: Psalm 62; Waiting on God

When it is obvious that life isn’t going the way it should (Ps 62:3), what do you do? Do you wait on God in silence (Ps 62:1)? Does your soul wait for God alone (Ps 62:5)? Do you rest in God’s deliverance and ability to bring out of it good for you (Ps 62:7)? Do you trust him at all times and tell him all your troubles (Ps 62:8)? Or, do you whine about your place in life (Ps 62:9) or resort to sin to get what you want (Ps 62:10)?
The choice is ours on how we want to handle life’s tragedies as well as victories. However, the Lord will take care of those who are waiting for him because steadfast love belongs to him (Ps 62:12). Those who take things into their own hands and those who resort to evil to get relief from life will be accountable to the Lord and he will repay them according to how their conduct (Ps 62:12).
How do we wait on God? Does it mean praying and doing nothing else or does it mean striving ahead and hoping that we’re doing what God wants? I’ve heard people claim both of these. Yet it really depends on the circumstances. There are times that waiting requires something of us. Psalm 37:7-8 requires us to stop our anger and trying to get justice on our own terms when we see evil. It requires us to seek the Lord and his wisdom because we will wait forever if we don’t (James 1:5-8). At other times, the wait is inactivity such as when a farmer waits for the grain to grow before the harvest (Mark 4:26-29). There are times when we must be patient and wait for the Lord’s promise as the apostles did before Pentecost (Acts 1:4). In all of these, there is one common element of waiting and that is praying. Whenever we wait, whether doing what we should or being at rest, we can and should pray without ceasing (1 Thess 5:17).
