January 17: Proverbs 3:21-26: Social Media Wisdom

Social media can certainly get one into trouble. It doesn’t take much to read some post and then want to respond negatively. What we say or show there may circulate around the internet and come back and haunt us years from now. What we say may be truthful or not, it may be opinion, or fact. But it doesn’t always need to be said. If it needs to be said, the way we say it doesn’t need to spawn more anger or malice.
Today’s reading in Proverbs provides good advice about what or even whether to post. First of all, we should ask if it is wise to post something. Sometimes, it needs to be said and sometimes it doesn’t need to be said though it is correct. So, the Proverb warns us to use wisdom and discretion. Balancing these two will not come back and haunt us but will refresh our souls and will be attractive to others. Too many have lacked wisdom or discretion and it has come back to bite them.
If you want to have peace so that when you lie down to sleep, then keep these things in mind the next time you post that rant against one thing or another. Think about these things the next time you decide some politician, boss, or teacher has gone off track according to your opinion.
I know that sometimes what is going on in the world seems overwhelming and you just have to shout out about it. Sometimes this comes because we haven’t been wise or discerning in our own lives, but it is also the way the world is. It is broken and unfair. It is full of hurt and sin. Sinful people do sinful things and cause pain for themselves and others.
Since wisdom comes from the Lord, we need to make sure we are getting his wisdom and not the world’s (James 3:17). When we have our confidence in the Lord, he will help us keep from letting all the world’s fears over politician, boss, teacher, and even disasters result in unwise and undiscerning responses in life and not just in social media posts.
