God’s wrath means this: God’s holy, righteous opposition to sin and evil.
It is not God losing control.
It is not God being cruel.
It is not God having a bad temper.
God’s wrath is His settled, perfect, holy response to everything that corrupts, destroys, rebels against, or opposes what is good.
And God’s wrath does not stand alone. It flows from
everything else He is.
Because God is holy, He cannot be indifferent toward evil.
Because God is just, He must deal with sin rightly.
Because God is good, He opposes what harms His creation.
Because God is love, He hates what destroys the people He made.
Because God is omniscient, His wrath is never based on missing
information.
Because God is wise, His judgment is never reckless.
Because God is immutable, His opposition to evil never changes.
And because God is omnipotent, His justice cannot be stopped.
That means God’s wrath is not the opposite of His love.
It is the holy response of His love, justice, goodness, and holiness toward
sin.
If God looked at evil and felt nothing, He would not be
good.
If God ignored sin forever, He would not be just.
If God tolerated wickedness without judgment, He would not be holy.
But the wonder of the gospel is this: at the cross, God’s wrath and God’s mercy meet. God did not ignore sin. He judged sin in Christ, so sinners could be forgiven without God compromising His holiness or justice.
So God’s wrath means evil will not win, sin will not be excused, and justice will not sleep forever. God is not indifferent. He is holy, just, good, loving, and active against all that destroys what He made.
That is the sobering comfort and glory of God’s wrath.
