Understanding God’s Attributes Matters

Understanding God’s attributes matters because it changes how we know God, worship God, trust God, and live before God. If we misunderstand who God is, we will misunderstand almost everything else: worship, sin, grace, suffering, obedience, and the gospel.

First, understanding God’s attributes helps us know God as He has revealed Himself.
We are always tempted to imagine God according to our feelings, culture, fears, or preferences. But God’s attributes correct our imagination. They teach us that God is not whoever we want Him to be. He is who He has revealed Himself to be — holy, loving, just, wise, good, sovereign, faithful, merciful, and glorious.

Second, understanding God’s attributes protects us from distorted views of God.
If we separate God’s love from His holiness, we create a God who ignores sin. If we separate His justice from His mercy, we create a God without compassion. If we separate His power from His goodness, we create fear instead of trust. God’s attributes belong together because God is never divided against Himself.

Third, understanding God’s attributes deepens our worship and trust.
We worship differently when we see the fullness of who God is. His holiness gives reverence. His goodness gives confidence. His wisdom gives peace. His faithfulness gives endurance. His sovereignty gives hope. His mercy and grace lead us to gratitude. The more we know His character, the more our souls learn to rest in Him.

Finally, understanding God’s attributes shapes how we live.
We are called to reflect God’s character in the world. His holiness calls us to purity. His mercy teaches compassion. His patience teaches long-suffering. His faithfulness teaches integrity. His love teaches self-giving. Knowing God’s attributes does not merely inform us; it transforms us.

So understanding God’s attributes matters because it helps us know the true God, reject false views of Him, worship with reverence, trust with confidence, and live in a way that reflects His character.

That is why God’s attributes matter.
