God’s Attributes

When we talk about God’s attributes, we mean this: the qualities God has revealed about who He is.
They are not random facts about God.
They are not separate pieces that make up God.
They are not personality traits that change over time.
God’s attributes are the true and perfect ways He has made Himself known.

So when we say God is holy, loving, just, wise, eternal, faithful, merciful, sovereign, and good, we are not describing different parts of God as though He were divided. We are describing the one true God in the fullness of His perfect character.

And every attribute relates to the others.
God’s love is holy love — never selfish or impure.
God’s justice is good justice — never cruel or corrupt.
God’s mercy is wise mercy — never careless or unjust.
God’s power is sovereign power — never out of control.
God’s patience is holy patience — never indifference toward sin.
God’s faithfulness rests on His immutability, because He never changes.
And God’s glory is the radiant display of all that He is.

That means we should never isolate one attribute from the rest. If we speak of God’s love without His holiness, we distort Him. If we speak of His justice without His mercy, we misunderstand Him. If we speak of His power without His goodness, we misrepresent Him.

God is not one attribute at a time. He is always fully Himself: holy, loving, just, wise, good, sovereign, merciful, faithful, and glorious.

So studying God’s attributes is not just learning theology. It is learning to know God as He truly is.

That is the wonder of God’s attributes.
