God’s Attributes

When we talk about God’s attributes, we mean this: the qualities God has revealed about who He is.
They are not random facts about God.
They are not separate pieces that make up God.
They are not personality traits that change over time.
God’s attributes are the true and perfect ways He has made Himself known.

So when we say God is holy, loving, just, wise, eternal, faithful, merciful, sovereign, and good, we are not describing different parts of God as though He were divided. We are describing the one true God in the fullness of His perfect character.

And every attribute relates to the others.
God’s love is holy love — never selfish or impure.
God’s justice is good justice — never cruel or corrupt.
God’s mercy is wise mercy — never careless or unjust.
God’s power is sovereign power — never out of control.
God’s patience is holy patience — never indifference toward sin.
God’s faithfulness rests on His immutability, because He never changes.
And God’s glory is the radiant display of all that He is.

That means we should never isolate one attribute from the rest. If we speak of God’s love without His holiness, we distort Him. If we speak of His justice without His mercy, we misunderstand Him. If we speak of His power without His goodness, we misrepresent Him.

God is not one attribute at a time. He is always fully Himself: holy, loving, just, wise, good, sovereign, merciful, faithful, and glorious.

So studying God’s attributes is not just learning theology. It is learning to know God as He truly is.

That is the wonder of God’s attributes.

God’s Attributes - Glory

God’s glory means this: the radiant display of who God is in all His perfection.
His glory is not one attribute beside the others.
It is the shining beauty, weight, worth, and majesty of all that God is.

God’s glory is His holiness displayed.
His goodness displayed.
His wisdom displayed.
His power displayed.
His love, justice, mercy, grace, patience, faithfulness, sovereignty, and nearness displayed.

That means God’s glory is the visible and knowable radiance of His invisible greatness. When God reveals His character, His works, His name, His salvation, and His presence, He is displaying His glory.

And God’s glory connects to every attribute because every attribute reveals something true and beautiful about Him.
Because God is self-existent, His glory depends on nothing outside Himself.
Because God is infinite, His glory has no limit.
Because God is eternal, His glory never fades.
Because God is holy, His glory is pure.
Because God is good, His glory is beautiful.
Because God is sovereign, all creation exists under His purpose.
And because God is love, mercy, and grace, His glory is seen most clearly in the face of Jesus Christ.

Everything exists to reflect, reveal, and respond to the glory of God. Creation declares it. Scripture reveals it. The gospel displays it. Worship celebrates it. And eternity will be filled with it.

That is the wonder and glory of God’s glory.

God’s Attributes - Immanence

God’s immanence means this: the God who is above creation is also present within creation and near to His people.
He is not distant.
He is not detached.
He is not watching from far away as though creation runs on its own.
The transcendent God is also intimately involved with what He has made.

And that is important because God’s immanence must be held together with His transcendence. God is not part of creation, but He is present with creation. He is not contained by the universe, but He is active within it. He is above all things, and yet near to His people.

God’s immanence connects to His other attributes.
Because God is omnipresent, He is never absent.
Because God is omniscient, He knows us completely.
Because God is good, His nearness is kind.
Because God is love, His presence is personal.
Because God is merciful and gracious, He draws near to sinners through Christ.
Because God is sovereign, His involvement is purposeful.
And because God is holy, His nearness transforms us rather than leaving us unchanged.

God is near in creation, near in providence, near in prayer, near in suffering, and near through His Spirit. But we see His immanence most clearly in Jesus Christ, where the eternal Son entered creation to dwell among us.

So God’s immanence means the God who is high and lifted up is also close, caring, present, and involved.

That is the comfort and glory of God’s immanence.
