Take Refuge

Where do you take refuge when everything around you seems to be going to pot? Take a lesson from King David as he turns to the only sure place of refuge in Psalm 57:1.

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,
for in you my soul takes refuge;
in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge,
till the storms of destruction pass by.

If we want to take refuge in God, the first thing we need to do is ask Him to be merciful to us. Really! Look at ourselves in contrast to the holiness and perfection of God. There isn’t a single day that we don’t need mercy because of our rebellion against him.

The next thing we need to do is to really want to take refuge in God instead of the false assurances of the things of this world. This is a soul or spiritual desire to be with God. If we are afraid of God, we won’t have this desire. Frankly, that desire to be with Him comes only from God and it starts when we are born again.

That desire isn’t just because we want to escape the trials of this life. It is something that we desire even when we are experiencing good times.

We can only take refuge in God when we trust Him with everything in our being. We must first trust Him for our eternal salvation through Jesus Christ and Him alone. Then we can trust that He has our life here on earth in His hands and that He is working everything in our lives for our eventual good.

Desires of Your Heart

Will God give you all the desires of you heart? This is exactly what Psalm 37 verse 4 says:

Delight yourself in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

I’m sure there are many false prophets out there that love to quote this verse out of context to tell you that all you have to do is delight in the Lord and whatever you want, the Lord will give it to you.

Well, that’s only part of the story. Read the next verse because there is a condition and explanation of what it means to delight in the Lord. Verse 5 says,

Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him, and he will act.

Delighting in the Lord means committing all that you are to the Lord. It means you commit to having all his holiness, his righteousness, his glory (to name a few things) are what you want as a result of living for the Lord.

When you delight in the Lord in this way, then the desires of your heart will bring him glory. You will only ask for things that bring glory to God according to his will. Then, when you trust him to work out his will, he will act.

If you don’t know Jesus as your Lord, then you can’t possibly delight in him, and you won’t get the desires of your heart because the desires of a person who hasn’t come to know Jesus for salvation is only evil in God’s sight according to Genesis 6, verse 5.

Sleep Peacefully

Do you have trouble sleeping? Does everything int the world, wars, disaster, diseases, and even people keep you awake at night? Maybe it's your own behavior that keeps you awake. What do you do? Listen to what David said about his sleep in the midst of all the troubles surrounding him.

David wrote in Psalm 3 verses 5 through 6, "I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid of many thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around."

Like this picture, David simply lay down to sleep and had a good night's sleep because the Lord took care of him. He wasn't afraid of the demons, the warring countries or even the people in his own country that opposed him and wanted to get rid of him. His trust was in the Lord.

Isaiah put it this way in chapter 26 verse 3, "You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you." You see, when we focus our mind on the problems instead of the problem solver, we will be anxious and unable to sleep. Even if we don't have enemies, we can be anxious about just the daily cares of life. What to eat, what to wear, do people like me, am I good enough, am I ugly.

If you want to have the peace of mind that gives you a good night sleep, then you must trust the Lord. You must have your mind focused on him. If you don't know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you will never know that peace because you will not have peace with the Lord.
