God really does know what’s going on in our country, in our cities, and especially in our own hearts. Listen to what was confronting David in Psalm 55:9-11

Confuse the wicked, O Lord, confound their speech,

for I see violence and strife in the city.

Day and night they prowl about on its walls;

malice and abuse are within it.

Destructive forces are at work in the city;

threats and lies never leave its streets.

David could have written this today or just about anytime in history and for the future as far as we can see. We think it is worse today than it was back then because we have so many more ways to do violence and have strife in our cities. I don’t need to list the problems. Besides, if I did, some of you would actually agree with some of the malice and abuse. Then you would be yelling at me.

But this is for sure, regardless of your belief system, destructive forces are at work in the city. Satan is wreaking havoc. There are threats and counter threats by those who are wicked or very much deceived by those who are wicked. So we have lies that never leave the streets.

Sounds mightily depressing, doesn’t it? But David and I have faith that the Lord is in control. He tells us in verse 22

Cast your cares on the Lord

and he will sustain you;

he will never let the righteous fall.

The cities may fall, and I can guarantee you that the wicked will pass away. But if you know Jesus Christ as your Savior, you will outlive them all in eternity. If you don’t know Him, you are in trouble because David says in verse 23, “But you, O God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of corruption.”

God’s Instruction

Do you want to learn from God?

Here is what Psalm 32 says in verses 8 through 10.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;

I will counsel you and watch over you.

Do not be like the horse or the mule,

which have no understanding

but must be controlled by bit and bridle

or they will not come to you.

Many are the woes of the wicked,

but the Lord's unfailing love

surrounds the man who trusts in him.

What a contrast between a teachable person and one who will not be taught by the Lord.

God will watch over the teachable person.

The unteachable will be like someone who has to be controlled by pain.

What do you want? The Lord’s unfailing love or the woes of the wicked?

Being taught by the Lord starts with knowing Jesus.

God Greater Than Santa

People think God is like Satan. So, “the wicked renounce God and say in his heart, ‘You will not call to account’?” (Ps 10:13)

People have attributed to Santa qualities that are only available to the Lord. You’ve all heard the lyrics of the song that says he knows who is naughty or nice and knows when you are asleep or awake, good or bad. So be good for goodness’ sake.

But just because Santa is coming to town, there is nothing he can do to right wrongs. He is not omnipotent but impotent. Here is what Psalm 10 verses 13 and 15 says,

Why does the wicked renounce God
and say in his heart, “You will not call to account”?
But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation,
that you may take it into your hands;
to you the helpless commits himself;
you have been the helper of the fatherless.
Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer;
call his wickedness to account till you find none.

Why do the wicked think they can get away with all this? It’s because they don’t see justice in this world. They see powerful people getting away with lying and cheating among other things. They see immorality promoted in Hollywood and among politicians. They don’t understand 2 Peter 3 verse 9, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

Psalm 10 is all about the Lord bring judgment on oppressors and evil people who don’t think the Lord will do anything. But the Lord promises there will be a day when the wicked will find judgment and the oppressed will see justice. He will no longer be patient.

If you’ve put off repenting and turning to Jesus for salvation because you think the Lord doesn’t see or won’t judge you by his standards, you need to turn and repent before his patience wears out.
