Understanding God’s love changes everything: we are wanted, not used; held by His character, not our performance; and taught to love others because He first loved us.
Understanding God’s love matters because it changes how we see God, ourselves, the gospel, and the way we love others. If God’s love is self-giving, holy, faithful, and not needy, then His love is not fragile emotion. It is the steady overflow of His perfect character toward His people.
First, God’s love means we are wanted, not used.
Because God is self-sufficient, He does not love us because He needs us to
complete Himself. He is not lonely, lacking, or dependent. His love is a free
gift. That means we are not being used to fill a void in God. We are being
loved by the One who is already full and gives Himself for our good.
Second, God’s love means we can rest in His character
when we feel unworthy.
Our feelings rise and fall. Our obedience is imperfect. Our confidence can be
shaky. But God’s love is rooted in who He is, not in how impressive we are. His
love is holy, faithful, and unchanging, so the believer’s hope rests in God’s
character, not in personal performance.
Third, God’s love helps us understand the cross.
The cross is not God ignoring sin. It is God’s love moving in perfect holiness
and justice to rescue sinners. At the cross, God’s love, justice, mercy, grace,
wisdom, and holiness meet. We see that His love is not sentimental. It is
costly, righteous, and redemptive.
Finally, God’s love teaches us how to love others.
If God’s love is self-giving, then love is not merely a feeling we wait for. It
is a commitment to seek the good of others in truth. God’s love shapes our
patience, forgiveness, generosity, compassion, and sacrifice. We love because
He first loved us.
So understanding God’s love matters because it teaches us that we are loved by a God who needs nothing, gives freely, saves fully, and changes us to love others with His kind of love.
That is why God’s love matters.
