God’s goodness is not random kindness or weak sentiment. His goodness is holy, wise, powerful, faithful, and seen most clearly in Christ.
God’s goodness means this: God is perfectly good in who
He is, in what He does, and in how He relates to His creation.
He is not partly good.
He is not sometimes good.
He is not good only when life feels good to us.
God is good by nature, good in intention, and good in every action.
And God’s goodness does not stand alone. It connects to
everything else He is.
Because God is holy, His goodness is pure and never corrupt.
Because God is wise, His goodness always knows what is best.
Because God is omnipotent, His goodness has the power to accomplish His
good purposes.
Because God is omniscient, His goodness is never mistaken or uninformed.
Because God is immutable, His goodness never changes.
Because God is eternal, His goodness never expires.
And because God is love, His goodness moves toward others with
generosity, kindness, and care.
That means God’s goodness is not weakness.
It is not sentimental softness.
It is not God ignoring evil or pretending pain does not matter.
God’s goodness is holy, wise, powerful, faithful, and true.
When God creates, He creates good.
When God commands, He commands what is good.
When God disciplines, He does it for good.
When God saves, He shows the depth of His goodness in Christ.
Even when we cannot understand His ways, we are never dealing with a cruel God, a careless God, or a cold God. We are dealing with the Lord whose heart toward His creation is good, whose purposes are good, and whose goodness is seen most clearly in the gospel.
That is the comfort and glory of God’s goodness.
